What is the history of the Engagement Ring?
I was sitting here thinking about wedding and engagement Rings (one of those random thoughts that pop into my head from time to time).
I already knew the history of a Wedding Ring, but really didn’t know anything about the engagement ring.
What is the history behind it? How long have Engagement Rings been given? I always thought it was only something created by jewelry companies to make more money. Is this correct?
The earliest uses of symbolic rings are attributed to different peoples, including the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. Betrothal rings were meant to symbolize a woman’s connection to the man who would become her husband, though the arrangement was more of a business proposition than a romantic union. Romans used iron rings to symbolize strength and permanence, and the Greeks are credited with the initial idea to wear the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, where the “vena amoris” or vein of love was supposed to connect to the heart.
During the ninth century, Pope Nicolas I endorsed the idea of engagement rings by making a gold ring a betrothal requirement to demonstrate the groom’s wealth and ability to care for a wife. In 1215, Pope Innocent III made a similar declaration though the rings could consist of different metals, including silver and iron, and the rings were meant to be worn during a longer engagement period. The better the ring, the wealthier the groom.

How to buy a diamond Engagement Ring in NYC?
I am shopping for a diamond engagement ring and I was wondering if you know any stores in NYC’ s Diamond District. I did my homework with the Four C’s and set up a budget and have an idea what she would like so I just need a reputable place to buy the ring.

NYC’s Diamond District gets a bad rap because a while back few greedy companies showed up on TV trying to cheat shoppers.
I personally know few people who has been working on this street for over twenty years. These are the honest people who have to fight with this bad rap because few bad apples tried to make fast money.
What I suggest is, if you already done your homework and you know exactly what you want, by getting a diamond with a certificate from a reputable gemological institute then all you have to do is shop and compare the diamond prices and then decide on a ring. You can get an easy idea on the diamond market and prices by shopping few online stores then when you walk in to a store you know what to expect and you can easily negotiate at these stores because of the sheer competition they face on the street. Just make sure to compare apples to apples ( which will be easy with an official diamond certificate).
In terms of actual stores, I can recommend a store where my best friend purchased his wife’s ring with a GIA certified diamond set in a Verragio mounting at Shenoa Diamond at 1 West 47th Street. You can’t miss it, it’s the largest individual store on 47th Street. They were very nice to him there and they gave a fair price.

my bf of 7 years and i have been talking about getting married for a while..finally we set a date in april, it isn’t going to be anything big, just 10 people, so i can plan it in no time..the thing is he said to me..dont we have to get engaged first? and i was like well you have to propose…but we can just assume we are since we already have a date set..(i used to think he was going to propose but then i said it doesn’t matter to me as long as we are married) i know we skip it..but i know he still wants to do it.. the other day we went to look at Rings, both Engagement and bands..so I dont knwo if hes really clueless about it or its just being silly..i dont wan to tell him how he should pop the question..but i want to guide him in the right direction…should i tell him to ask friends or read a book or something.. any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

my guy and i have been together for almost 5 years. we kind of did the same thing…decided together to get married and started planning before having a ring and official proposal. the way he did this was so cool. we went to look at rings together and i picked out the ring i wanted. he put off getting it so we could look around some more and price hunt, but he knew that was THE ring. sooo, one day he went and got it and did the whole official down on the knee proposal thing on his own and i had no idea. i thought we were going out that friday to look some more and little did i know he was going to propose on tuesday! it was still a great surprise, just as though it happened out of the blue. maybe you can tell him you want to look at rings so he can have an idea of your taste and, after going out, ask him if there is anything else he needs/wants to know..that you don’t want to talk about it anymore so you can be 100% surprised WHEN he does it. if you tell him that blatently, maybe he will get that you want him to put thought and effort into it. be thankful that you dont have to hope that your bf had good taste in jewelry..you have input!
